Overview

Presented in conjunction with Brit Asia, the UK’s leading homegrown Asian entertainment channel, the inaugural Punjab Film Awards in Governor House Grand Ball Room was a captivating event, honouring those for their artistic and technical excellence in the field of Punjabi Cinema.

MW Ball

Brief:

The brief was to provide a full technical production at London’s Grosvenor House, production which matched the elegance and prestige of the event. The Punjab film awards would feature various live performances and the awards would be broadcast around the world. DMX Productions was tasked with designing the show and supplying all the technical elements; lighting, video, audio and special effects.

Solution:

To ensure that the production was elegant, we provided a bespoke stage and set design. Furthermore, with the event being taped for TV, we devised a two-stage concept featuring a main stage and a performance stage, to make viewing easier for audience members present. At the same time, we needed to make sure that the presentation looked clean and polished, with all performances prepped separately on the performance stage, and change overs done off-camera, helping keep the show on schedule.

The performance stage contained a split LED wall structure. The awards stage was surrounded by a flown, four-way overhead projection cube with four Panasonic laser projectors delivering the razor sharp content to screen. Both structures were running bespoke graphic content, operated by our in-house technical team. Our camera package included a jib and multiple Sony broadcast cameras, at various locations in the room.

Different techniques were used to ensure the lighting design was suitable for TV records. This was achieved by the combined use of beams, washes, molefays, floods and generics, located throughout the venue, the key idea being that lighting and video featured in every camera shot was utilised, thus achieving the visual spectacle required by the client.

Our PA package contained a combination of our D&B Q series boxes, including Q1s, Q10s for the stage fills and Q subs, with additional monitoring solutions and control from the DLive front of house audio desk. D&B Q was the ideal choice as its output to weight ratio allowed small hangs to cover the whole ground floor of the ball room, within the limited ceiling point weight limits.

Project Deliverance:

With the use of our reality vs. render process during pre-production, we were able to work with Brit Asia in developing a production which surpassed all initial expectations.
